Chargers get moved for three reasons: the garage is being remodelled, a new vehicle put the charge port somewhere else, or the household is moving house. Each is a different job.
Measure before you decide
Before any work gets quoted, do one thing: park the vehicle where it will actually live and see whether the existing cable reaches.
Charge ports sit in different places by manufacturer — left rear, right rear, front quarter — and the assumption that a new car means a new installation is wrong often enough to be worth five minutes with the cable. Sometimes the answer is backing in rather than pulling forward. That is a free solution.
When it genuinely does not reach, the options are extending or re-routing the circuit, or repositioning the unit somewhere the reach works. Which is cheaper depends on the run and what the walls allow, and it is a site assessment question rather than something to guess at.
Garage remodels
A remodel is the right moment to move a charger, because the walls are already open and running conduit is at its cheapest.
It is also the moment charger position gets forgotten until the drywall is back up. If a remodel is planned, tell us early. Repositioning during the work costs a fraction of repositioning afterward.
Moving house
A hardwired charger is worth taking. It is your equipment and the removal is straightforward, though it is electrical work at both ends rather than unscrewing a bracket.
The variable is the destination. A new house needs its own load calculation, its own circuit, and possibly its own panel conversation — moving from a 2015 build in Cypress to a 1970s house in Spring can mean the charger that worked fine now needs capacity the new house does not have.
We would rather establish that before moving day than after.
Inside to outside
Moving a charger outdoors is not only a position change. The unit has to be listed for outdoor use, which not every indoor-mounted charger is, and the enclosure rating has to match the exposure — 3R inland, 4X near Galveston Bay and the ship channel where salt air is a factor.
The exterior run needs appropriate conduit, and where it crosses a slab joint or the gap to a detached garage, an expansion allowance. Houston clay moves those surfaces relative to each other, and a rigid run spanning them without allowance is a run under stress.
Voltage drop on longer runs
When a relocation makes a run materially longer, the circuit gets re-checked rather than assumed.
Conductor sizing accounts for length, and a run that grows enough can need larger conductors to keep voltage at the charger within an acceptable range. This comes up most on properties around Manvel, Alvin, Tomball and Magnolia where detached garages and long driveways make for long runs.
Permits
Moving a charger generally alters or extends a branch circuit, which is permitted work. Inside Houston city limits that falls under HPWCODE1056, and the permit issues only to a master electrician registered with the city under Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1305.
Outside the city the authority follows the address — Harris County Engineering for unincorporated areas, or the relevant municipal building department.
