Level 2 charging is a dedicated 240-volt circuit, a breaker sized to it, and a charger mounted where your vehicle’s charge port actually sits. That is the whole job. Everything that makes one installation good and another one a callback happens before any wire is pulled.

What decides whether your house is ready

The question is not what your charger draws. It is what your house already draws, and how much of the service is left over.

A whole-home load calculation adds up the fixed loads — HVAC, water heater, range, dryer — and compares the total against your service rating. That number tells you whether a charging circuit fits, whether it fits at a reduced amperage, or whether the panel is genuinely the limit. It is a short piece of work and it settles the largest cost question on the project before anyone quotes you a panel upgrade.

Houston housing stock splits cleanly here. Homes in Cypress, Fulshear, Katy and the newer parts of Missouri City were built with 200-amp services and usually have room. Homes in Pasadena, Spring and older Baytown were built with 100 or 125-amp services for a household that did not own a second air conditioner, let alone an electric truck.

How is the circuit sized?

The charger’s continuous rating sets the circuit, and a continuous load may only occupy 80 percent of a circuit’s rating. A charger commissioned at 48 amps therefore needs a 60-amp circuit, not a 50-amp one. Conductors are then sized for that circuit and for the length of the run.

That last part matters more in Houston than the arithmetic suggests. Ambient temperature reduces how much current a conductor can safely carry, and a run routed through an attic in August sits far above the outdoor air temperature. A circuit sized off a chart without that correction is undersized in practice, and it announces itself as a breaker that trips every few sessions.

Where the charger goes

Cable reach decides the layout more often than anything else. Charge ports sit in different places depending on the vehicle — left rear, right rear, front quarter — and a charger mounted on the wrong wall turns into a cable stretched across a parking space.

We measure against where the vehicle actually parks, not where the panel happens to be. If that means a longer run to put the unit on the correct side, the longer run is the right answer.

For exterior installations, the enclosure rating follows the site. Inland, a NEMA 3R enclosure is appropriate. Along the ship channel and Galveston Bay — Baytown, Deer Park, La Porte, Seabrook, League City — salt-laden air attacks hardware and terminations, and a 4X-rated enclosure with corrosion-rated fasteners is the difference between equipment that lasts and equipment that gets replaced.

Slab movement and conduit

Houston sits on high-plasticity clay that swells and shrinks with moisture. Slabs move, driveways crack, and detached garages move independently of the house. A rigid conduit run crossing that boundary without an allowance for movement is a run under stress.

Where a circuit crosses a slab joint, a driveway, or the gap between a house and a detached structure, the run needs a fitting that accommodates movement. It is a small detail that does not show up on a quote and shows up eventually in a damaged conductor.

Permits and inspection

Inside Houston city limits, EV charging outlets fall under permit type HPWCODE1056. Permit fees run $94.00 for Level 1, $100.71 for Level 2 and $107.42 for Level 3, plus a $33.56 administrative fee. Inspection is required, the permit is valid for 180 days, and plans are required for Level 3 equipment.

The part most homeowners do not expect: the city issues electrical permits only to master electricians registered with the City of Houston. That is a licensing structure set out in Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1305, and it means the permit is not something you can pull yourself and hand to whoever does the work.

Outside the city, the authority changes. Unincorporated Harris County goes through the Harris County Engineering Department, which has required residential permits for this class of work since September 1, 2009. Bellaire, West University Place, Sugar Land, Pearland, League City and the other independent municipalities each run their own building department with their own fees and scheduling.

What about the federal tax credit?

The federal 30C credit for residential charging equipment expired on June 30, 2026. It previously covered 30 percent of cost up to $1,000 per port in qualifying locations. Many EV charger pages still advertise it. It is gone, and a quote built around it is a quote built on money that will not arrive.

If your home is served by Entergy Texas rather than CenterPoint — which covers The Woodlands, Conroe and Magnolia — a $250 per-port incentive is available through the eTech program for ENERGY STAR certified Level 2 equipment, applied for directly online. That is worth checking before you choose hardware, because the certification requirement rules some chargers out.

How long does a Level 2 charger take to install?

A straightforward installation with panel capacity already available is usually a single visit. The variable is not the charger, it is the run length, whether the panel has room for a two-pole breaker, and whether an inspection has to be scheduled before the circuit is energized.

Do I need a permit for a Level 2 charger in Houston?

How much faster is Level 2 than a regular outlet?

A standard 120-volt outlet adds a few miles of range per hour. A 240-volt Level 2 circuit replaces a normal day of driving in a few hours and a nearly empty battery overnight. For a full-size electric truck, the difference is the gap between usable and impractical.
