Hardwiring means the charger is wired directly to the circuit with no plug and no receptacle in between. Two situations call for it: amperage above what a receptacle circuit supports, and outdoor installations where the plug connection is the component most likely to fail.

Above 40 amps

A 50-amp receptacle circuit supports 40 amps of continuous charging. That is the ceiling, set by the rule limiting continuous loads to 80 percent of circuit rating.

Plenty of vehicles never need more. Full-size electric trucks are a different case. A Lightning, Silverado EV, Cybertruck or R1T carries roughly double the pack capacity of a compact EV, so the same overnight window returns a smaller share of the battery. Houston buys more full-size trucks than almost any market in the country, and the households replacing one with an electric version are exactly the ones who notice the gap between 40 and 48 amps.

Going above 40 amps means hardwiring. A 48-amp charger requires a 60-amp circuit, conductors sized for it, and panel capacity to match — which is where the load calculation decides whether the plan works as-is.

The plug is the failure point

Every connection is a place where resistance can develop. A plug-and-receptacle pair adds one that is mechanical, exposed, and subject to being unplugged and replugged.

Outdoors along the ship channel and Galveston Bay, salt-laden air works on that connection continuously. Contacts corrode, resistance climbs, heat follows. In Baytown, Deer Park, La Porte and Seabrook we see this pattern often enough that we treat an outdoor receptacle near the water as a maintenance item rather than a permanent installation.

Hardwiring removes the interface entirely. Combined with a 4X-rated enclosure and corrosion-rated fasteners, it is the configuration that survives on the coast.

Some manufacturers require hardwiring for outdoor installation regardless of location. Worth checking against the specific unit before you decide.

What hardwiring does not fix

It does not create panel capacity. If the load calculation says your service cannot carry a 60-amp circuit, hardwiring the charger does not change that — it just means the constraint shows up as a panel conversation instead of a receptacle one.

It also does not travel with you easily. If there is a move in your near future, the flexibility of a NEMA 14-50 receptacle may be worth more than the amperage headroom.

Installation detail

Conductors are sized for the charger’s continuous rating and for the length of the run, with ambient correction applied where the circuit passes through an attic. Houston attic temperatures in summer sit well above outdoor air, and a conductor sized without accounting for that is undersized where it matters.

Strain relief and conduit entry are matched to the enclosure so the rating is not defeated at the point the cable enters. A 4X enclosure with an unsealed entry is a 4X enclosure in name only.

Where the run crosses a slab joint, a driveway, or the gap to a detached garage, an expansion allowance goes in. Houston clay moves those surfaces relative to each other, and a rigid run spanning them is a run under load.

Permits

Permitted work under HPWCODE1056 inside Houston city limits, with inspection required and a 180-day permit validity. Permits are issued only to master electricians registered with the City of Houston, per the licensing structure in Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1305.

Outside the city, authority follows the address — Harris County Engineering for unincorporated areas, or the local building department in the independent municipalities.

Incentives

The federal 30C credit expired June 30, 2026 and is not available for any installation completed after that date.

Entergy Texas customers in The Woodlands, Conroe and Magnolia can claim $250 per port through eTech for an ENERGY STAR certified charger, applied for online. Verify the specific model carries the certification before purchase.

When do I need hardwiring instead of a 14-50 outlet?

Above 40 amps of continuous charging, because that is the ceiling a 50-amp receptacle circuit supports. Also when the manufacturer requires hardwiring for outdoor installation, and whenever the unit lives outdoors near Galveston Bay where a plug connection corrodes.

Do electric trucks actually need more than 40 amps?
