NEMA 14-50 vs. Hardwired: Which Suits a Houston Garage
Receptacle or hardwired for a Houston EV charger? The answer depends on amperage, portability, and how close you are to Galveston Bay.

This choice comes up on nearly every Houston installation, and the honest framing is a trade rather than a right answer.
A receptacle buys portability. Hardwiring buys amperage headroom and one less thing to fail. Where you live decides how much that second point is worth.
The amperage ceiling
A NEMA 14-50 receptacle sits on a dedicated 50-amp circuit, and a continuous load may occupy only 80 percent of a circuit rating. That puts the ceiling at 40 amps of charging.
Plenty of vehicles never need more. Full-size electric trucks are the exception — a Lightning, Silverado EV, Cybertruck or R1T carries roughly double the pack capacity of a compact EV, so the same overnight window returns a smaller share of it.
Houston buys more full-size trucks than almost any market in the country. If you have replaced one with an electric version and drive it hard, the gap between 40 and 48 amps is real, and 48 amps means hardwiring.
Portability is a genuine argument
If you rent, expect to move within a few years, or want the charger to follow you, the receptacle wins straightforwardly. Unplug it and take it.
The caveat is that the next house needs a matching circuit, and that house may be older. Moving from a 2015 build in Cypress to a 1970s house in Spring means a load calculation and possibly panel work before the charger you brought with you is usable.
Near the bay, this stops being a preference
Along the ship channel and Galveston Bay — Baytown, Deer Park, La Porte, Seabrook — salt-laden air attacks a plug connection continuously.
The sequence is predictable. Contacts corrode, resistance rises, heat follows, and the connection fails. We treat an outdoor receptacle in those cities as a maintenance item rather than a permanent installation, and the durable answer is hardwiring in a 4X-rated enclosure.
Inside a closed garage the exposure drops considerably and a receptacle is defensible. The distinction is exposure, not postcode. League City illustrates this well — waterfront properties need the coastal specification, inland streets in the same city do not.
If you choose the receptacle, specify the part
The single most common failure we are called to is a scorched 14-50.
The cause is almost always a commodity receptacle asked to carry near-maximum current for hours, night after night — a duty cycle it was never designed for. It was built for occasional RV and range use.
An industrial-specification receptacle costs meaningfully more and does not do this. When comparing quotes, ask which one is in the price, because both will say “14-50 outlet.”
The short version
Choose a receptacle if you may move, want flexibility between vehicles, and 40 amps is enough. Choose hardwiring if you need more than 40 amps, the equipment lives outdoors, or you are anywhere near the water.
