Choosing a Weather-Rated Charger for Gulf Coast Humidity
NEMA 3R or 4X for a Houston outdoor EV charger? What salt air, heat and humidity actually do to equipment, and how to specify around it.

Houston gives outdoor electrical equipment three problems at once: sustained heat, high humidity, and near the coast, salt. Each attacks something different.
Rain is the easy part
A NEMA 3R rating handles falling rain and is the appropriate specification for outdoor equipment across most of the metro — Katy, Cypress, Spring, Sugar Land and inland generally.
If someone quotes you a coastal specification for an inland Houston address, you are paying for a property you do not need.
Salt is the hard part
NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance, and that is the property that decides equipment life near the water.
Salt-laden air does not damage things suddenly. It works on terminations, fasteners and enclosure seams over months. Resistance at a corroded connection climbs, heat develops, faults become intermittent, and eventually something fails. By the time it is visible it has been happening for a while.
Where this genuinely applies: Baytown, Deer Park, La Porte, Seabrook, and the waterfront portions of League City. It is a gradient, strongest with direct bay frontage.
Where it does not: Webster and Friendswood sit near Clear Lake but far enough back that 3R is appropriate. Lake Houston properties around Atascocita are fresh water — humid, not corrosive.
The enclosure rating has to survive the installation
A 4X enclosure with an unsealed conduit entry is a 4X enclosure in name only.
Strain relief and entry fittings have to match the enclosure rather than be whatever was in the van. Fasteners have to be corrosion-rated too, because a stainless enclosure on plain steel screws fails at the screws.
This is where a coastal specification is genuinely earned or quietly skipped, and it is invisible on a quote.
Hardwiring beats a plug outdoors
A plug and receptacle is a mechanical connection exposed to the air. Near salt it is the first thing to go.
Hardwiring removes that interface entirely. Combined with 4X, it is the configuration that lasts on the coast, and it is what we specify for anything exposed within reach of the bay.
Heat, and what it does
Houston heat produces two effects worth knowing.
The first is thermal throttling. A charger reducing output when it detects high temperature is designed behaviour, not a fault, and in August it can be a reasonable response to real conditions. Persistent throttling is still worth diagnosing, because it can indicate a connection developing resistance.
The second affects the circuit rather than the charger. Conductor ampacity falls as ambient temperature rises, and a run through a Houston attic sits far above outdoor air. Conductors sized without that correction are undersized in practice, and it shows up as a breaker that trips every few sessions.
That is not a weather-rating question, but it is the same climate causing it, and it is the more common of the two problems.
Specifying it properly
Ask three things about any outdoor installation: what the enclosure rating is, whether the conduit entry and fasteners match that rating, and whether the conductors were sized with ambient correction for the route they take.
