Baytown sits between the ship channel and Galveston Bay, and the air here is harder on electrical equipment than anywhere else we work except the immediate bayfront.
Why a plug-in outlet is the wrong choice here
Salt-laden air attacks contacts, terminations and fasteners continuously. A plug-and-receptacle connection outdoors gives it a mechanical interface to work on, and the sequence is predictable: contacts corrode, resistance climbs, heat follows, and eventually the connection fails.
We see this pattern in Baytown often enough that we treat an outdoor NEMA 14-50 near the water as a maintenance item rather than a permanent installation.
Hardwiring removes the interface. Paired with a NEMA 4X enclosure and corrosion-rated hardware, it is the configuration that lasts here. Inside an enclosed garage the pressure is lower and a receptacle is more defensible, but exposed installations should be hardwired.
Enclosure rating is not a detail
Inland Houston installations use 3R enclosures and that is appropriate. In Baytown, 4X is the specification — it is the difference between equipment that survives and equipment that gets replaced.
The rating also has to survive the installation. A 4X enclosure with an unsealed conduit entry is a 4X enclosure on paper only, so strain relief and entry fittings get matched to the enclosure rather than treated as generic.
Older housing, older services
A significant share of Baytown housing was built mid-century around the refining workforce. Goose Creek, Lakewood and Eva Maud carry service sizes from that period.
That puts the load calculation at the front of most jobs here, and it makes load management a frequently better answer than a service upgrade where the shortfall is modest.
Repairs are a real part of the work here
More of our Baytown calls are repair and diagnosis than in most cities we cover, and corrosion is usually behind it. A charger faulting intermittently after two years outdoors near the channel is rarely a defective unit. It is a corroded termination raising resistance.

The City of Baytown runs its own building department, with its own fees and inspection scheduling. Not Harris County, and not the City of Houston.
