31 cities across five counties. Which one you are in decides more than you would expect — the permit office, the utility, and whether a rebate is available at all.

Three permit regimes

City of Houston, unincorporated county, or your own city's building department. Neighbouring addresses can differ.

Two utilities

CenterPoint across most of the metro; Entergy Texas in parts of Montgomery County, where a rebate applies.

Coastal versus inland

Bayfront cities need corrosion-rated equipment. Inland addresses do not, and should not pay for it.

The city is not the whole answer.

Which permit office covers you, who supplies the electricity, and whether a rebate exists are three separate boundaries and they do not line up. Most of the metro is CenterPoint; parts of Montgomery County are Entergy Texas, where a rebate applies.

Add the coastal question on top of that and two addresses in the same city can need different equipment. Use these pages to orient, then let the address decide.
