What EV Charger Installation Costs in Houston

Most Houston Level 2 EV charger installations land between $1,200 and $3,000+, and where you fall in that range is decided before anyone touches a wire.
That spread is not vagueness. Two houses on the same street can need genuinely different work, and the range is wide because the deciding factors are wide. What follows is what moves the number, so you can read a quote rather than just compare totals.
The short version of where you land:
- Toward the lower end — recent construction, panel on the garage wall with capacity available, car parks a few feet away, inland, standard equipment.
- Toward the upper end and past it — older service needing a panel upgrade, a long trenched run to a detached garage, higher amperage for an electric truck, or coastal specification near the bay.
The single largest jump is the panel. Everything else moves the number by less.
The panel decides more than the charger does
The largest single variable is whether your existing electrical service can carry a charging circuit as it stands.
Three outcomes, in ascending order of cost. Your panel has capacity, and the job is a circuit and a mounted charger. Your panel is close, and load management lets the charger coexist with the rest of the house by yielding when things are busy. Or the service genuinely cannot carry it, and the panel or the service entrance has to grow.
The gap between the first and third outcome is larger than every other variable on the job put together. It is also invisible until someone runs a whole-home load calculation, which is why nobody credible quotes this over the phone.
Houston housing stock predicts it reasonably well. Cypress, Fulshear and post-2000 Katy were built with 200-amp services and usually have room. Pasadena, Spring and older Baytown were built with 100 or 125-amp services and frequently do not.
Distance from panel to parking space
The second variable is the run.
A panel on the garage wall with the car parked ten feet away is a short circuit in conduit. A panel at the front of the house with the vehicle in a detached garage at the back of the lot is tens of yards of trenched conduit, larger conductors to hold voltage across the distance, and an expansion allowance where the run crosses between two slabs that move independently.
This is why West University Place with its alley-access garages, and acreage properties around Tomball and Alvin, price differently from a suburban tract home with an attached garage.
Amperage
A 32-amp circuit and a 48-amp circuit are not the same job. Higher amperage means larger conductors, a larger breaker, and more demand on available panel capacity.
Whether you need the higher rate depends on your driving. A household in Manvel commuting up SH 288 to the Medical Center daily uses the extra rate. A two-car household where the EV does short local trips generally does not, and paying for capacity you never draw is money spent on nothing.
Connection method
A NEMA 14-50 receptacle and a hardwired charger cost broadly similarly, because the circuit is the same work either way. The receptacle adds a part; hardwiring removes one.
The reason to choose between them is not price. It is portability against amperage headroom and durability, and near the bay it is durability by a wide margin.
Site conditions
Things that add labour without being obvious from a photograph:
- Finished walls. Running conduit through finished space costs more than an exposed garage wall.
- Coastal specification. Baytown, Deer Park, La Porte and Seabrook need 4X-rated enclosures and corrosion-rated hardware, which are not the standard parts.
- Attic routing. Conduit through a Houston attic needs conductors sized with ambient temperature correction, which can mean a size larger.
- Two vehicles. A second circuit is where available capacity usually runs out.
Permits are a small line
Inside the City of Houston, the Level 2 electrical permit under type HPWCODE1056 is $100.71 plus a $33.56 administrative fee. Level 1 is $94.00 and Level 3 is $107.42. Inspection is included and the permit is valid for 180 days.
Those are published figures. Permitting is not where your money goes, and a quote presenting it as a major cost is worth a question. What permitting does require is a master electrician registered with the city — the city issues electrical permits to nobody else.
What you can and cannot claim back
The federal 30C credit expired June 30, 2026. It is gone. If a quote or a competitor’s page still assumes it, that assumption is worth about a thousand dollars of imaginary money.
If you are on Entergy Texas rather than CenterPoint — parts of The Woodlands, Conroe, Magnolia — the eTech program pays $250 per port for an ENERGY STAR certified Level 2 charger, up to two units. Check the certification before you buy the hardware, because it excludes some otherwise good chargers.
Most of the metro is CenterPoint, where we are not aware of a current equivalent.
How to read a quote
Ask three questions. Was a load calculation done, and what did it show? What amperage is the circuit, and what will the charger be commissioned at? Is the permit included, and who is pulling it?
A quote that answers all three is comparable to another quote that answers all three. A quote that answers none is a number without a job attached to it. That comparison is the subject of why quotes vary so widely.
